Insofar as the Look at the Princess trilogy having to end, I like how things panned out. The political intrigue parts, perhaps, weren’t as strong, because characters were rushing towards the finish line and getting tangled up in all sorts of confusions in trying to keep their heads (some did better than others. :P) Novia, as usual, ruled the planet with an iron fist. The “statue powers” were basically utilized or ignored whenever it served the plot. There was some stuff with Cargn that was perhaps kinda iffy, but that dude was in between a rock and a hard place anyway. Mostly he was around this episode for meta purposes—giving us backstory on Scorpy. But I feel like John and Aeryn had some strong character moments, romantic and otherwise. And the Moya subplot wrapped up in a satisfactory manner.

The strengths in this story have to do with the emotional connections between the characters, methinks, both our stars and even some of our guest stars. There were lots of scenes that centered on their desires, goals and sense of duty. Even real life connections—at the beginning of the trilogy Ben’s son made a guest appearance, and now his daughter. Will talk about that more under the cut. And the final scene (shippy J/Aness) has to be a fandom favorite. :P I think our takeaway from “Farscape”’s first trilogy is in line with John’s—that despite some cost, in the end “the good guys get to win for once.”

Episode summary is here, courtesy of the John and Aeryn Fansite.

I’ll just start with the Moya subplot—it’s quick and unconnected to the rest, after all. (Zhaan and Pilot even keep it secret from the rest of the crew.) Kahaynu materializes to our priestess to suggest that she man a transport—ah, so he isn’t just leaving her to die, after all. But she has a plan to trap him—the DVDs suck him into an engine, unless he recomissions Moya! He refuses to at the moment but later, when Zhaan is performing last rites on unconscious Pilot, he changes his tune. Basically it’s been his tune all along—this has been a test, to make sure that Zhaan is a good steward for Moya. Kahaynu explains that he knows that Moya is peaceful, despite what’s been done to her by the Peacekeepers, and now he needs to make sure that her crew, whom she would easily follow, are peaceful as well. I suppose that makes sense. Zhaan could force Moya to birth more gunships (by the way, Kahaynu, maybe you should float over to Crais and Talyn? :P) Besides, much of mythology centers around gods testing mortals this way. And maybe it’s convenient that he tests Zhaan alone (given Virginia Hey’s makeup issues and this being a quickie subplot,) but it’s also true that Zhaan is sort of the mother of the ship. Moya, speaking rarely again, even asks the priestess to sing to her. <3 Awww.

Back in the main plot, things are a little more complicated. Chiana and D’argo are waiting for Scorpius to leave (he has to by the next solar day) and then they’re hoping that Moya will, yanno, pick ‘em up. :P Rygel intends to stay! :O I can….kind of see why. First of all, he thrives in this sort of environment. But, although he tells his companions that maybe he can advise John, I’m assuming he ultimately would want to seek his revenge—which, he stated several episodes back, is his only reason for living. But maybe he stands a better chance of making worthwhile allies on the Royal Planet anyway. Meanwhile, D’argo and Chiana speak to John, because these statues can speak! :P Which brings me to the first flub of the episode. Clavor and Cargn slice off John’s head right in sight of Katralla. So why wouldn’t the rest of the crowd just speak to her in order to gather information, rather than running about blind?

John’s not really dead, of course. :P Because statues cancel out fatal decapitation. So Clavor does a villain speech and dumps him in acid—that ought to do it. …except that Scorpius then fishes him out. (He has a DNA connection that he took from the Aurora chair…file away…) He thinks he can get the wormhole tech he needs from John’s head alone. …except then Jenavian (hidden from him) shoots him, takes John, and ultimately puts his body back together (again, wouldn’t Katralla hear/see everything? And yet no one asks her. In fact, Jenavian un-statues John so that he can do it. …I suppose he can tell Novia the whole story, at least.) And, well, there’s another reason, too, probably the real one. Jenavian realizes, since John barely survived being statued, that he’s not Sebacean, ergo not a Peacekeeper, ergo he knows too much about her. But she doesn’t kill him…she’s hoping to convince him to keep on the straight and narrow so that she can do her job (save hundreds of lives, yadda yadda.) She’s willing to trade…she is a politician after all. :P I like Jenavian. She’s a secret agent of Peacekeepers, and ergo a little more free and sneaky than the usual drone types. :P She’s a lot of fun.

Cargn’s plot has gone to pot. :P Clavor lets him know that John—head and all—is gone. So Cargn goes to Scorpius and D’argo, who have formed a tense alliance, all three of them looking for John. Our Scarran ascertains through heat hand, that D’argo doesn’t know John’s whereabouts. But then D’argo gives up Chiana as someone who might?? This isn’t even logical, unless you take into account a deleted scene where Chi wonders if Tyno is right about Aeryn. Let alone that D’argo would give up his lover, but I guess that was torture talking. :/ Anywho. Cargn interrogates Chiana, finds out she knows nothing (and also now believes that Scorpy didn’t plant John as an agent,) but he keeps her anyway, to lure out D’argo? He’s decided he wants to kill the Luxan, cos I guess if you’re gonna die, you wanna go out swinging. Novia is gung ho on killing offworlders for this regent-stealing nightmare, so Cargn kills Clavor, since the snippy prince was going to betray him anyway. And because, well, Clavor’s days were numbered in this story. Too much of a snot…he’s the Joffrey. :P (But another quibble—Tyno tells Rygel that Novia will kill all offworlders due to Clavor’s death, but then they won’t once John reappears? Why? Her son is still dead! *sigh*)

So let’s just get to the real reason Cargn is around—to serve the broader story by explaining Scorpius’s problems with getting overheated. :P (Though in this specific circumstance, it appears to be an act. Which kinda throws the whole reveal into jeopardy, but it happens to be the truth…Scorpius needs his cooling rods to regulate his temperature.) Another subtle reveal is how little the Scarrans—or the Peacekeepers, whom Scorpy is actually fighting for—actually care about him. I mean, Jenavian didn’t think to work with him; she just stunned him and took John. But the biggest Scorpy reveal lies in his already hinted-at relationship with John. He tells D’argo this ep that even our human himself doesn’t know how deep it goes. And theeeen…well, John seems to have a little trouble killing him. Kills Cargn fine (thank goodness for a kink in the armor :P) but his more direct enemy? He flashes to a memory of Scorpy injecting him in the Aurora chair. File that away, yes yes.

The crux of the episode is relationships. Let’s start with the sexual. :P The folks on the ScapeCast don’t like that John, in effect, broke his marriage vows (though was fidelity a part of those vows?) and claim it besmirched his character. …eh, I dunno. I think, given everything he’s suffered on the Royal Planet (multiple assassination attempts, painful marriage ceremony, getting his head chopped off and thrown in acid,) he might be into a little hanky panky with a willing partner. He didn’t know he was already a dad yet, either, which is a different can of worms. I rather liked, after all of the J/A drama, that we could see them interacting with new people. Was a breath of fresh air, I think. John had some well-deserved fun and Aeryn got to have a heart to heart with Mr. Romantic about her relationship issues (he owed her after the disastrous mountain climbing date! But sheesh, to see Aeryn haul his ass around on a broken leg…that girl is hardcore. Nice outdoor Aussie!coast scenes, too.) Finally, that J/A moment where they find out that they’re compatible…wonderful acting, especially by Claudia. I love how the “working out” was her working up her courage to do the compatibility test. (Vulnerability all over her faaaaaace.) And her smile as she walked away from John? Priceless.

I’ll go ahead and be unusual by putting in an extra paragraph. Cos that scene with John and his daughter at the end…wooow. I really like it, because it proved that even the “happy ending” of getting to leave the planet and go back to Moya, comes with consequences. This is where John’s character shone through, where he’d be a statue and forego Earth to be a father to his child. And I bought that he couldn’t undergo the process again. Besides, it gave a happy tie-up to Katralla and Tyno—Tyno could rule in his stead; girl’s already preggers anyway. :P (And I love how Novia is the ultimate politician about it—she’ll allow it, so long as the details remain secret from the people. :P ) But gah, Ben’s acting, with his own daughter, after all, but even with putting a heavy hand on statue-Katralla’s shoulder before leaving. We don’t talk about this development much again on the show, mostly because it interferes with the major, driving action, but in my head I keep going back to it. (D’argo certainly does, in his final scene with Chiana where he’s thinking about his son. Love that tie-in.) John has a daughter in the Uncharted Territories, a daughter who will be raised in love, but whom he will never know. And in a meta way, I think this plagues the character and informs his ever-evolving personality throughout the series. I would hope so.

Favorite Crichtonism: *after D’argo leaps over the vat of acid to catch Chiana in midair* How Batman was that?!

Favorite Quotes:
*concerning John the statue*
Rygel: I think he should have taken his pose more seriously.

Tyno: I believe he did the best he could.

*statue-John speaks to D’argo and Chiana*
D’argo:: Do you feel any pain?

John: No. But I'd really love to pick my nose.

D’argo:: He remains without a sense of humor. It's good to hear your voice John.

John: Yours too. Hey can I say hi to Chiana?

D’argo:: *passes earpiece* Chiana.

Chiana:: You look great in bronze.

John: You look great in pink. Brings out your eyes.

*Clavor explains why headless John is still alive*
Cargn: Are you sure he's still alive?

Clavor: Of course. Each cell is self-encapsulated. As long as the parts stay in their metallized state, he can be reconstituted.

Cargn: Very impressive.

Clavor: My great-grandfather was broken in half when the senate collapsed after a groundshaker. All he suffered was a severe limp.

*Aeryn’s first bout of incompatibility with Dregon*
Aeryn: Are you always this agreeable?

*Novia’s policy is an eye for an eye*
Novia: Whoever perpetrated this atrocity shall pay in kind - beheaded!

*Tyno names Aeryn as a suspect and gives the funniest command ever*
Tyno: Where is the one called Aeryn Sun? The former Peacekeeper.

Rygel: We don't know!

Tyno: She was upset that Crichton was to marry the Princess. I saw it with my own eyes.

D’argo:: You can't possibly -

Tyno: I can't possibly not! Find her. Bring her to us for questioning.

Rygel: If you want someone with a motive for stealing Crichtons head, try that vigelar - Scorpius!

Tyno: Everyone is suspect, especially offworlders. If Prince Clavor assumes the throne, I cannot guarantee your safety. Find your friend's head!

*Zhaan in her showdown with Kahaynu*
Zhaan: How does it feel for your prayers to go unanswered Kahaynu?

*when his head is at Jenavian’s chest level, after she explains how she will save him*
John: Whoa - nice dress.

*Dregon likes to tell the truth from “a certain point of view”*
Dregon: We're too high!

Aeryn: Wot? You've done this before, haven't you? Is that right? You were rated "expert," correct?

Dregon: At the training facility.

Aeryn: This is your first wall?

Dregon: Yeah. - outside.

Aeryn: For the love of Chilnack...

*Jenavian lays out her logic with John*
Jenavian: The data scan listed John Crichton as non-Sebacean. So - if you're not Sebacean, you're not Peacekeeper. If you're not Peacekeeper, you're not Special Directorate. If you're not Special Directorate, you can't be a Disrupter. And if you're not a Disrupter, then you know too much about me.

*But Jenavian also lays out her master plan*
Jenavian: I couldn't give a crags ass about anything but my job. Prevent the Scarrans from getting a claw on this empire. You're my best chance of making that happen.

John: Assuming I'm willing to play garden gnome for the next 80 cycles.

Jenavian: John - if I fail, so many innocent lives will be lost. Help me do my job, and I'll help you get what you want. Whatever it is.

John: You know things never work out like you plan.

Jenavian: That's what makes it fun.

*the good guys win in the Moya subplot, too*
Kahaynu: Upon my first exploration of Moya, I knew the circumstances that produced her gunship offspring. And I knew she was a worthy soul.

Zhaan: Then why did you put her through this?

Kahaynu: To see if you were worthy. These are gentle beasts, who will ultimately follow the directions of those in control. Should you desire it, Priestess, you could produce an army of killing machines.

Pilot: But Zhaan would never -

Kahaynu: Of course she wouldn't. We know that now. We are confident that you will protect Moya vigorously against those who seek to exploit her. You are worthy of that responsibility.

Zhaan: If that is so, then I demand you leave this ship immediately!

Kahaynu: As you wish. But first, Moya wishes to speak with you.

Moya: Zhaan. One request -

Zhaan: Anything Moya!

Moya: Sing!

*Scorpius and Cargn argue meta politics*
D’argo:: You're half Scarran aren't you?

Scorpius: By which measure I should not be judged.

Cargn: Because it would find him lacking! Ka D’argo is it? Luxan. A great race of warriors. I am honored. *to Scorpius* And to you - biological mistake - I commend your plan. Having an agent marry the Princess. How did you defeat my DNA alterations of her?

D’argo:: Scorpius is not in league with Crichton. We despise him.

Cargn: Truly, have I misjudged the situation that badly?

Scorpius: Even if you established diplomatic ties with this dynasty, that would mean that we - Peacekeepers - would have to respond. Preventing it. And that would mean a total conflagration.

Cargn: But who would be seen as aggressor, all but sealing their access to the uncharted territories?

*Aeryn’s advice about rock climbing and injuries*
Aeryn: I know. It hurts. Do you want it to not hurt? Well, next time...hold on to the FRELLING WALL!

*Rygel’s been watching the last few episodes*
D’argo:: Rygel!

Rygel: Huh?

D’argo:: Have you seen Chiana?

Rygel: No. Have you tried -- looking under your sheets?

*Clavor speaks his own death warrant*
Clavor: Look - my mother knows about us. I can't be married till I renounce you.

Cargn: I will not allow it.

Clavor: I'm doing you a favor. Mm? She's going to start the ceremony by executing offworlders. Get out of here. Hide. Run.

Cargn: There's no way for me to escape and you know it.

Clavor: And I thought - you were good.

Cargn: I am. I have one final question for you, duplicitous Prince Clavor.

Clavor: What?

Cargn: Do you know, that as promised, I am about to kill you?

*Scorpy engages in foreshadowing*
D’argo:: You'll never get Crichton. He'll die first.

Scorpius: You underestimate the strength of a relationship. Even your friend - does not yet understand.

*Dregon is the Royal Planet’s Dr. Phil*
Dregon: Does your leg hurt? It's broken.

Aeryn: I'm trained to deal with that.

Dregon: That's the answer. You're not trained to deal with emotions, so you're afraid of them. Emotional pain. You wear it like a badge. It means you've been there. And it can't get callused, because each fresh hurt stings like the first.

Aeryn: But why would you want that?

Dregon: Because of all the days before it hurts. The good days. When you're in love. It's too bad you can't get back to at least tell Crichton how you feel.

Aeryn: What difference would it make? He's a frelling statue.

Dregon: But he can hear. He can see. He'll know Aeryn. At least he'll know.

*John and Jenavian prove to be good actors*
John: Jena - sorry about your Prince - but I hear he deserved it. *SLAP*

*Cargn discloses Scorpy backstory*
Cargn: Is it too hot in here Scorpius?

D’argo:: What's the matter?

Cargn: When he becomes incapacitated, I shall turn my full attention to you.

Scorpius: Nothing! It's nothing! Don't listen to him!

Cargn: Because if you do, you'll know his mutants weakness, that his Scarran half loves the heat, thrives in heat - craves heat. But his Peacekeeper half is destroyed by the same warmth.

D’argo:: Is this true?

Cargn: Thermal regulator suit. Cooling rods inserted directly into his brain. Tell me the rumors are true. Please tell me your search for thermic constancy is tormentful!

*John’s threat to Scorpy once he fails to kill him*
John: I'm not your enemy. I'm not your friend. You leave me the hell alone, or the next time we part, one of us'll be dead.

*Novia is passive aggressive*
John: I am sorry if it upsets your line of succession, but I am not going to be a statue again!

Novia: I understand your concerns as I'm sure you must understand ours. However, you're the kind of man that would walk away from his own child, we would not want you to rule.

*John and Katralla’s goodbye*
John: Right. Counselor Tyno can be your new king.

Novia: Their chromosomes are not compatible!

John: It doesn't matter! She's already pregnant. And it satisfies everything that you need. And it gives my child a good father. And they love each other. *with the earpiece, to Katralla* What do you say? Does this work for you?

Katralla: Yes. Thank you.

John: I'm sorry that I won't be around.

Katralla: I'll - never forget.

*just because I’m a sap*
Little Girl:: Hi - are you my Dad?

John: Yeah, that's right.

Little Girl:: I love you Daddy.

John: *after girl fades, puts his hand on Katralla’s shoulder, then to Tyno* You take care of my little girl.

*D’argo: feels my pain*
D’argo:: Ah - I just can't stop thinking how Crichton'll never see his daughter again.

Chiana:: Hits pretty close to home huh?

D’argo:: The fact that I may never see my son again is a grief I would wish upon no one. It pains me to think of what he's going through right now.

Chiana:: Pains me too. And you thought we weren't compatible.

*and here’s one for the J/A shippers. <3*
