In this eppy, when Xena is in the middle of one of her standard “rescue the innocent” operations, she meets up with a part of her awful past that…isn’t so awful. Turns out she has an old friend, a very close *ahem* old friend who may or may not be swayed to join her in the path of good by the end. Interested to see what happens next? It’s all under the cut!
Completely unrelated note…the female guest star this week, Jana, shares her name with my sister. Hey, I thought it was cool!
Two lovers in strange headbands are sitting beneath a tree where little, white feathers fall on their loveliness. They’re young, smitten and engaged; they talk about how their marriage will end the Romeo/Juliet-esque feud between their two houses. Soon they’ll be back here with their grandkids talking about the good ol’ days… “and that one of their parents was made here,” the boy, Agranon, says suggestively. Me-ow. Cue make-out! But unfortunately, unbeknownst to the couple, something is watching them from behind some trees! Jana soon senses their presence but before they can react, some masked thugs are upon them, knocking Agranon unconscious and taking Jana captive! Oh no! What are these poor kids gonna do??
Thank goodness Xena is in town. :P With her trusty sidekick, Gabrielle, who babbles forever about “the life of adventure” and events from last week’s eppy while the warrior princess is forced to take care of some particularly aggressive townsmen. They enter a tavern where the lewd behavior continues; I especially like how nonchalantly Xena punches these guys with the back of her hand. :P This encourages a couple guys to quickly vacate seats when the gals come near. :P “Did you ever notice we never have trouble getting a table?” Gabrielle quips.
Agranon is in this tavern, and he thinks he’s found something in the warrior princess. He saunters over and lays his money bag down. He tells him his tale of his fiancée getting kidnapped; he wants them to go rescue her. If they don’t, their families might re-start their war. At first Xena refuses, claiming she doesn’t work for nations or for hire. (Am wondering how she and Gabs get money to eat, personally.) But when Agranon becomes desperate, declaring his genuine love for the girl, Xena changes her tune. The dude thinks his girl has been taken to the city of Trachis, a place that Xena’s familiar with. An arms dealer named Mezentius stands to gain a lot of he keeps the families feuding, so a wise Arganon thinks he’s behind the dastardly deed. Xena tells him to give his money to the poor, and for “payment” she’ll take his medallion. Gabrielle is worried that being around these thugs may cause Xena to relapse into evildom again, but Xena says don’t sweat it. She leaves the two, romantic youngsters together in the tavern, and she heads off across New Zealand landscape towards Trachis.
In the town Mezentius and his lieutenant are selling weapons to Jana’s distressed father. The emotive merchant claims horror at what has transpired, but of course when the man leaves, he turns to his lieutenant to confirm that the princess has arrived. He grows excited, thinking about his increased profit. Slimeball.
Xena enters her old stomping grounds as a group of men bond over wine and assault memories. They’re shocked—they heard she’s working for peasants now? “All part of the cause,” Xena explains, deftly flipping one guy and putting her sword to his neck. She gains their trust and can then take advantage of them. Little do the goons know that they’re actually the ones being played. All but the lieutenant, whom Xena addresses as Marcus…”You expect us to believe that?” Xena straightens and Marcus talks smack about her mama. :-O The warrior princess gets in close and tense, and then Marcus adds, soft and friendly, “How is your mother, Xena?” Zing! We’ve been had!
Agranon is telling an enraptured Gabrielle his love story. Sheesh, you’d think an aspiring bard would be wary of her competition. ;) Gabs latches onto a plan—he should tell Jana’s dad how he feels… “Once he hears this story, he’s got to believe that you would never kidnap her.” Negotiator Gab to the rescue! Agranon may be nervous, but he ultimately decides to go along with it.
Marcus and Xena are catching up…in a fashion. Xena twists the truth a little bit; claiming she was ransoming the baby last week rather than saving him. The music grows softer, belying the relationship between these two. The warrior princess explains that she and “her army” are here to make a profit from this impending war. Mezentius comes in around this time, bee-lining for one of his goons, whom he accuses of stealing arrows. When the man denies it the merchant kills the two men he claims the goon turned. “Stop by my office tomorrow and you have a job,” Mezentius concludes. “Otherwise, get the hell out of Trachis.” Damn, that man can make a statement.
Later Xena and Marcus walk outside where Marcus confirms that Mezentius did in fact kidnap Jana. In case we need more proof, two guards are dragging a struggling Jana right by here! Mezentius is commanding that the girl be “bathed and perfumed” for him, ugh. Marcus introduces Xena as his friend but in response Mezentius points arrows at her face! He knows who she is, evil Xena and all; she won’t get the best of him! Xena claims that she’s here to help, so the merchant tells Marcus to watch her until they can meet. Nice save!
Gabrielle and Agranon walk to Jana’s kingdom. Our babbling bard is rationalizing that the father of “a special girl must be special himself,” special enough to believe them in this case. Sure enough guards come, and Gab talks them up, introducing the pair of them. One of the guards takes Agranon’s sword and they are ushered forward. Gabby is feeling optimistic. Oh, that naivety.
Marcus shows Xena the “weapons warehouse”…strange title… and then his favorite place in Trachis. Turns out to be a “Xena”-ed up sauna—a hot spring, plants and candles everywhere, suggestive music. The two of them flirt, their words suggesting they may have been lovers in the past. Hubba hubba. This is the first person, other than Gabrielle, whom Xena has shown a real connection to. They’re getting a little hot and heavy, Marcus kissing her hand, when Xena yet again notices Jana being dragged by. Time’s a tickin. Xena pulls away and suggests they go talk to Mezentius now. This will save Jana from a particularly awful fate, thank goodness.
Xena says she brings an offer and some advice—she and her “army” will fight both sides of the war to keep it going indefinitely. More money for arms dealers that way! The constant battling will also keep both sides unaware of who actually kidnapped Jana. Mezentius looks shocked to find out that Xena knows about her…really, when you’ve been carting her out in the open like that? *scratches head* Marcus, for his part, quickly disavows any involvement in gossiping. :P Anywho once the fighting actually does stop Mezentius can ransom the girl off to the winning side—“either as a trophy or as a daughter.” Coooold. Xena’s price is weapons and half of the profits. “Why stop at half?” is a somewhat witless comment from Mezentius. “Well, if you push me I won’t.” I love Lucy’s sultry tone! The two of them strike a deal.
Outside, however, Jana has escaped and is getting ready to jump off a second story ledge! So much for that partnership. :P But Xena isn’t ready to give up so easily; she convinces Mezentius to let her talk the girl back down. “I like her energy,” the merchant comments to Marcus. “I really hope I don’t have to kill her.” Oh Mezentius. As if you could. :PP Anywho, at first, Jana is distrustful of Xena, even after she claims that Agranon sent her. Time to whip out the medallion! Once Jana sees that she’s a believer. Xena tells the girl to meet her in the hot spring room tonight, and then she coaxes her back inside. On the ground, “evil” Xena appropriately gloats over protecting their “investment.” Xena also has some advice for Mezentius—“don’t let your passion overcome your sense,” aka Jana is worth more as a virgin than she is spoiled. *shew* Mezentius is not thrilled by this and he levies the same claim back to Marcus…adding in that he shouldn’t forget his loyalty, either. *gulp*
A cloudy, full moon that night accompanied by a wolf howl…the weapons warehouse is tended by one inept guard who gets bopped upside the head once he goes to inspect Xena’s chakram in the wall. :P She’s looking around when Marcus finds her! Close behind are Mezentius and his men. Marcus covers for our lady, claiming he showed her the stash so her “army” could know their inventory. The merchant accepts the story and leaves. Not much of a thinker, this one. ;) When left alone Marcus asks Xena if she was looking to steal weapons. Xena more or less uses that as her excuse, and it earns her an admission from Marcus—he’s been doing the same thing himself! Turns out that goon from before wasn’t responsible for those missing arrows, perhaps. Marcus even knows a good smuggling route—a well that isn’t a well after all.
Marcus says he tried leaving the life of evildom once, after a warlord he was traveling with decided to kill a handicapped boy. “Obviously you came back,” Xena says, sounding wary. The evildom life sounds kinda like being a drug addict. :P Maybe they just need a 12-step program. “I wasn’t cut out for it, pure and simple,” Marcus replies. But she’s different, he notes. He remembers her always being determined, like she had something to prove…now it’s like she found the answer. A little heavy-handed, perhaps, but it’s actually quite the accurate depiction of Xena’s character shift. I like it. Xena likes it too, because she leans forward and gives Marcus a hearty kiss on the lips. Lucky boy gets some Xena-lovin’. :D
For a change of pace we have Gabby’s head in stocks at Jana’s father’s house. “What we have here is a failure to communicate,” she says. Agranon is next to her, a chain around his neck connecting him to the wall. So much for winning dear ol’ daddy over. But Gabs still has hope that she can talk her way out of it…until a guard lets it slip that the war has begun and the two of them will be the first executions. Eeep!
In Trachis things are getting hot and heavy between Xena and Marcus until yet again Jana stops the action. :P Or at least Xena’s memory that she has to meet the girl in the hot spring room asap. Of course it’s not as easy as just packing up and leaving because suddenly Mezentius is banging on the door! Dum dum DUUUM!
Jana hides and Xena, in a silky purple robe, answers. The merchant obviously has to flirt as the warrior princess sits on the edge of the pool, surreptitiously blocking Jana. Mezentius says that Agranon and a companion have been taken and killed…Xena softly pushes the girl’s head under water. :P The deaths are apparently a turn on as the merchant asks to join Xena in a bath. Her response: “The last time I talked business with a man in a hot spring, I almost lost a war.” …considering the nature of this show, I wouldn’t be surprised if this were the truth! ;) Once Mezentius leaves Xena helps Jana out of the tub and wraps her robe around her, aaw. There’s now no time to lose!
Marcus is enjoying a drink when a thug tells him the truth about what Xena’s been up to lately. Like last week—she didn’t ransom that baby, she saved it! :-O “She’s running something right now, and she’s got you like a good little lovesick puppet,” the goon concludes. Marcus refuses to believe, and even beats the guy up, holding a knife to his throat. But when he still doesn’t relent, Marcus gets the picture.
Xena is “shipping weapons” aka Jana to her father when her lover arrives. The warrior princess maintains that she’s putting together some arrows. Marcus picks one up, claiming she hasn’t seen this model before, and says he’ll test it out on the box! :-O Tension! And nice way to pull one over on Xena, man. She steps right in the line of fire and tells him to stop… “or else I’ll hit the princess?” Marcus asks. Xena comes clean about her motives—she’s here to save the girl and stop the war. Marcus is pissed that she used him as a “stooge.” He also claims that he would have stood by her if she told him the truth from the beginning. :-O So much for loyalty to Mezentius! Steal his weapons, steal his hostage...flirt with goodness?
“I care for you. You’re still a part of me,” Xena asserts as the merchant and his men sneak in. “I’m not that strong,” Marcus says, switching sides again. “I’m taking the girl.” Oh no he’s not. Xena kicks him in the face and gets to fighting! First she lets Jana out of the box and hides her in a loft part of the weapons warehouse. :P Then she kicks and cartwheels the hell out of the bad guys. I heart this woman. ♥
Marcus wakes, massaging his mouth. Jana tosses grain onto a goon below…innocent fight move ftw! Xena’s knocked out all the baddies and is closing in on the last one when Marcus steps up with his sword to Jana’s throat. :-/ Gulp. “You’re not going to hurt her,” Xena says desperately. “Don’t bet on it.” Time for the warrior princess to remind her lover of the story he told—Jana is just as innocent as the handicapped kid. This gets Marcus to relent. But not before Mezentius issues a kill order on the girl! :-O Marcus steps in and takes the bullet. Or arrow. Heart pounding here. Furious, Xena chakrams Mezentius in the throat, killing him instantly. Then she drops to Marcus…he’s raspily asking if this counts as a good deed. “Yeah,” Xena says sadly. Marcus dies in her arms. :(
At twilight, Gabrielle, Agranon, Jana and some nameless others join Xena as she burns the body on a funeral pyre. Must to mention that the beautiful, strong alto voice in that mourning song is Lucy herself! She sings the last note on screen as Xena. Gabrielle turns to her companion somewhat wonderingly: “I wish I could’ve met him.” “He was my friend,” Xena repeats, looking meaningfully into the fire.
Touching episode. As mentioned, this is the first time we’ve looked into Xena’s evil past and found something (or someone) worth saving. It’s too bad that Marcus finally changing came at such a high cost. You can tell that the whole thing spooked Xena…both how easy it is to go back, and perhaps the thought of her own mortality as well. But I’ll go ahead and spoil you to say that this isn’t the last time we’ll see Marcus. :D Which is a big spoiler in itself, cos what I mean is that death doesn’t stop us from following some “Xena” characters around! And I’ll stop now. :P
