There were some episodes in the first two seasons of “Farscape” that really took my fancy in a big way, slowly culminating into my obsessive interest that was cemented by the start of season three. :P The Look at the Princess trilogy, the first of a handful of such trilogies to come, is among them.

I think part of it might be because I didn’t realize it was coming. I’m pretty sure that I was viewing this as another throwaway episode (not that many episodes are completely without foreshadowing clues,) until the point where Scorpius made his grand entrance on the royal planet. It was our most prominent tie-back to the explosive end-of-season episodes from year one, ergo advancing the major plot. John’s freaked reaction (and Ben Browder’s choice acting while playing it,) also drew me in emotionally. (And keep in mind what I wrote earlier about foreshadowing. :P)

Even in terms of passing plot, I was more drawn than usual to this slew of guest stars. I especially enjoyed Felicity Price’s performance; she played the austere, sad yet dutiful Princess Katralla. And what can I say; family drama and political intrigue reels me in like a fish. Speaking of foreshadowing, my ASOIAF/ “Game of Thrones” obsession suddenly makes a lot more sense. :P

There’s a couple of other special guest stars—most notably, Ben’s real-life wife, Francesca Buller, whom we last saw as M’Lee in “Bone to Be Wild,” now playing the diminutive green alien servant, ro-NA. And unbeknownst to me until very recently—still geeking out about this—their real-life son played the hologram of John’s possible future son. :O (Gah, I loved that DNA holograph machine thing. Creative and heart-rending.) Can I get an aww!

Episode summary is here, courtesy of the John and Aeryn Fansite.

Let’s start out with the only love affair that really matters—John and Aeryn. :P (OK, I don’t really believe that, but we all know it has the biggest orbital pull.) The podcasters on the ScapeCast argued the merit of Chiana’s later allegation against Aeryn—that she only wants men she can’t have—but I think there’s some complicated truth behind that. True, when she scented her hair she likely knew that John wanted her, but when he directly confirmed it, she freaked out right quick. It was only on the royal planet, when he started happily making out with other girls and then this whole marriage deal, that she started to grow possessive. Although part of that was mistrust. Aeryn was the least comfortable on the royal planet—ironic, since they were her species—but she’s used to direct action, not the back allies of politics.

In fact, the royal planet really illuminated our main cast’s characteristics. Aeryn was bumbling, awkward, out of place and John was battling all sorts of convictions—his sense of honor when it came to marrying for love, his sense of altruism when it came to Katralla’s situation, his desperate desire to be free of Scorpius, his desperate desire to get home, etc. Rygel’s skill at negotiation actually served the crew well in this highly politicized situation (on Moya he’s more like Littlefinger, on the royal planet he’s more like Varys. :P) Even D’argo and Chiana’s newfound relationship served as some sort of fodder in how they approached John and Aeryn respectively (though I suppose that had little to do with the royal planet. :P Still, it was hilarious to watch John walk in on them twice. “Farscape” might not be HBO-esque, but it’s definitely adult.) I also really enjoyed the scene where they found out they’re not compatible for children—says a lot about their characters and ambitions.

So, the royal planet is embroiled in your usual political scandal. A breakaway colony of Sebaceans trying to keep a foothold in the volatile Uncharted Territories, the heir apparent, Princess Katralla, was poisoned by her brother, Prince Clavor, so that he could inherit the crown. She’s incompatible for children with Sebacean males (as proved by the “kissing liquid” that they party with,) but hey, waddaya know, John works. :P Dramatic brat Clavor and his (seemingly) insipid fiancée Jenavia, are beside themselves. Clavor is easily the most stereotypical character of this tableau, but I admit that I enjoyed his theatrics, as acted by Felix Williamson. The ladies, however, definitely provided more complexity. Katralla could have been a one-note bitch character, basically the female version of her brother, out for power and to ruin John’s life if necessary. Instead, she’s kind of Catelyn Stark-like, battling her own feelings for Counselor Tyno, vs her sense of duty, vs being trapped under her mother’s thumb. Then Tina Burstill played Empress Novia’s ruthless, if elegantly delivered, machinations with such aplomb that she seemed even like a match for Scorpius. (And I gotta say—I like this whole “endure for 80 cycles so you learn how to rule” thing. It’s grandiose—becoming for family drama. :P)

The final player in this royal planet political intrigue is the Scarran Cargn, using Clavor to get a foothold in. We heard of Scarrans in passing in last season’s finale—Crais made note that Scorpius was a “halfbreed”—but this is our first time seeing one. He immediately recognizes Scorpius and clues us as the audience into the fact that the Scarrans and Peacekeepers are basically enemies. He thinks this whole compatible-John thing is all a big plot from the halfbreed—makes sense, given the context and lends more layers to the story. Though of course, Scorpius is there for the wormhole tech. Right now he’s playing nice, extending a deal to D’argo and John himself, staying in Novia’s good graces…but there has to be more to his scheming, right? :P He didn’t come all this way, to be in John’s presence for the first time since his gammack base was destroyed, just to bid politely for access to our human's brain. We’ll have to wait and see…

Speaking of waiting and seeing, the subplot with Pilot, Moya and Zhaan is going slow thus far. But we have two more episodes, so no rush. (I loved the brief shot of Zhaan singing; was so soothing. :P But anyway.) First they starburst away from the planet, logically hoping to lure Scorpius with them. Now Moya is answering the call of…her gods? There’s not much more to say right now, but there will be!

Minor makeup notes—the Scarran head looked ridiculous. :P But I really liked the pink blush and up-dos on both Katralla and Novia. Was becoming and distinctive on both actresses. And because I can’t fit it in elsewhere—the Aeryn/Rygel moment is hands down the best smoochfest on the show. :P Sorry, J/A shippers.

*D’argo and Chiana discover they’re not compatible*
Chiana: Hey - Hey - It's just a game for us D'Argo. Okay? We don't play by the rules they do.

D’argo: The truth is we're not compatible.

Chiana: Only our DNA. Not the parts that make us feel pleasure...

*Aeryn forces Rygel to kiss her in order to ward off a suitor*

*Clavor and John are introduced*
Clavor: *blowing up at ro-NA* Stop it! Before I speak with them, not during! Ignorant creature.

Tyno: John Crichton, Prince Clavor. Our second in line to the Throne.

Clavor: First among my people. You may take the guards and leave us now Tyno.

Tyno: My instructions are otherwise. This potential suitor to the throne is to remain under protective custody at all times.

Clavor: And whose order dares to countermand mine?

Tyno: The Empress. Your Mother.

Clavor: I will speak with you - Later.

John: There's always one... In every family.

*the boys team against John on the marriage front*
John: I'm sorry. You're saying I should get married?!

Rygel: I would.

John: You're a polygamist!

D’argo: John -

John: What?

D’argo: Think it through. Scorpius has offered me a deal to turn you in.

John: What? Timeshare in his condo in hell?

D’argo: He's gonna leave the rest of us alone, and he promises not to destroy your brain as long as you give him access to the wormhole technology in your brain.

John: And you said...?

D’argo: That I'd talk to you about it.

John: That's it!

D’argo: I was STALLING him John! Now, Rygel and I are in agreement about this, so listen up!

Rygel: You increase our chances of figuring something out the longer you at least pretend to love this girl!

John: LOVE? Love! Rygel, there is no love! I am the reverse King Arthur. I am the one who could put the sword into the stone!

*John might not be accurately representing all of the cultures on Earth, just saying :P*
John: Relax Ace - I'm not gonna be your brother-in-law.

Clavor: Is this some sort of jest?

John: Jest? No. It's not a jest. On my planet, we don't marry people we don't love unless they're critically ill billionaires.

*Novia lays out the political—and personal—situation*
John: Why don't you let your son be King?

Novia: He's a fool. He would betray our neutrality for the genuflect of peasants. And that breach would toll in hundreds of millions of lives.

John: Yeah. Starting with mine.

Novia: I have no purpose for you, other than to keep my empire stable. If we recognize the Scarrans, Peacekeepers attack. Pact with Peacekeepers, Scarrans invade. You must wed Katralla.

John: Empress Novia, I understand your problems. But you need to understand, there's nothing you can say that's gonna make me marry your daughter.

Scorpius: Oh! Hello Crichton! I have traveled a long, long way just to see you again!

John: I hate to say that you've wasted your time Scorpy, but you have.

Scorpius: You know that no matter what you think, the rift between us need not be terminal.

John: Go away, Scorpy. It's over. Find another girlfriend.

Scorpius: Now don't let her frighten you John, hm? Now you make the correct decision.

Novia: My daughter, or that abomination. Choose.

*Katralla shows her true emotions*
Katralla: Tyno, I believe my mother will truly force me to marry this stranger.

Tyno: We can only hope.

Katralla: We can only hope?

Tyno: What am I supposed to say Katralla?

Katralla: You're supposed to say "No! Stop this travesty!" You're supposed to say `I will not let you marry that man!' You're supposed to take me away from this madness that is my life!

Tyno: There's too much at stake to stop this now - you must exchange espouses-

Katralla: But I love you!

Tyno: As I love you. But our union is not destined to be. You must go to Crichton. You must do your duty.

*Chiana lays out her argument against Aeryn*
Aeryn: You - don't - know - anything.

Chiana: Oh yeah? Well I know about men. You see that one over there? How many times has he tried to come onto you? What, three? Four? Look. He's well bred. He's rich. Handsome. Perfect. You're gonna let him get away too. You know why?

Aeryn: Oh go on. Tell me.

Chiana: Because you only want the ones you can't have! So you're gonna go to Crichton, you're gonna mess with his head, he's gonna get turned over to Scorpius and - dead!

Aeryn: This marriage is wrong and you both know it!

*Cargn approaches Aeryn, thinking she works for Scorpius*
Cargn: I don't believe I've had the pleasure.

Aeryn: Yes, I've heard that about Scarrans.

*John and Katralla prepare to use the DNA child holograph machine*
Katralla: The DNA testing confirms our incipient kiss. Our children will be healthy. Disease free.

Rygel: And you can see what they'll be like! Oh-ho! How many nasty surprises could I have avoided!

[looking at John’s possible son]
Rygel: Astounding device! Oh! Oh - looks just like you!

John: Yeah, he does kinda.

Rygel: Yet he may be able to overcome it!

*Cargn uses Scarran heat powers on Clagor and Jenavia*
Cargn: You do have half a mind Your Highness. But will you actually reveal our plans? Can you see past your childishness to realize any betrayal means your instant death - even if mine follows?

Clavor: Yes!

Cargn: I am - curious - dear Jenavia, to know of your loyalties? As I interrogated your loving fiancé, what was going through your delicate little miiiind?

Jenavia: I was hoping you wouldn't wear that to our wedding!

*just a taste of what’s to come with the Moya subplot…*
Zhaan: Who is it?

Pilot: The Builders... Her Creators… Her -- god.

*John doesn’t seem to mind interrupting D’argo and Chiana’s next sexcapade—or D’argo’s reaction :P*
John: Did you hear? - ABOUT THE STATUE? Hi Chiana. 80 cycles - EIGHTY CYCLES! That is roughly 80 YEARS to you and me and -- OVER 500 YEARS TO DOGS!

D’argo: Why don't you stay and tell us about it John?

*John finally gets to the crux of what’s bothering him about this statue thing, but D’argo is able to warm him to the idea*
John: Hope. D'Argo. It's what keeps you going. You're gonna see your son. I'm gonna get home. Hope. I have hope - or I have nothing.

D’argo: Look at what Fate has given you. Scorpius will no longer be a threat. And as a ruler you'll have power. Peace. Prosperity. You could create a family. Perhaps you've only just discovered your true destiny.

John: You've been spending way too much time with Chiana you know that?

D’argo: Amongst all the fluff she can make a lot of sense. Our time was good John. We had each other when we needed each other. But now it's time to move past your fears. See what's on the road ahead.

John: If I do this - you have to be my best man.

D’argo: Uh... I'm with Chiana now - John.

*John and Aeryn end on a more depressing note*
Aeryn: 80 cycles as a statue?

John: It's better than Scorpius!

Aeryn: Is it?

John: He's in my head. Back of my mind, corner of my eye - he scares me Aeryn, and I can't shake him.

Aeryn: I don't know what you're talking about - but there's never been anything we couldn't overcome together.

John: Except each other.
