I have a real soft spot for this episode. It’s pretty predictable in terms of plot progression, unlike much of “Farscape,” but I think it’s character moments are underappreciated (read: there’s a lot of Chiana in this episode and I’m a major player in her fan club. :P) But it’s also a big episode, I think, for John, and the evolution (no pun intended) of his place within the Uncharted Territories. He’s not quite the mocked newbie that he once was; in fact the majority of the crew now respects him greatly. But how have his alien journeys affected how he sees himself?
It’s also a big episode in terms of foreshadowing for the rest of the series. Expect to see clones again, but I’ll keep my mouth shut on the details. :P Thematically, issues such as multiple dimensions and multiple realities will also thread through later story arcs. “Farscape” likes to ask the deep questions. (Also, can't fit this in anywhere else, but there's the whole continuity issue when the Johns bring up Daddy Crichton, DK and former girlfriend Alex, which, yay :p).
I think in terms of D’argo, Zhaan (and Rygel, though less sympathetically,) they stay true to character for being secondary this time around. And speaking of evolution, Aeryn’s reactions to the three Crichtons has definitely changed from what it would be had this occurred early in season one. But I think the real props here to go Ben and Gigi, and the genuine affection they bring to the John/Chiana friendship. (And, yanno, Ben separately for playing thee such distinct characters, and getting his day in the creature makeup chair. :P)
Episode summary is here, courtesy of the John and Aeryn Fansite.
I’ll give my props to special effects—I like how the sphere turned out, as well as the organic-looking rupture of poor Moya. Honestly, why does almost every “Farscape” catastrophe result in life-threatening damage to our beloved ship and Pilot? :P Couldn’t really blame them for wanting everyone off board, though that doesn’t really fit with their charitable personalities.
Speaking of characters and personalities, we get to see a lot of them in how they relate to John. Zhaan gets the least screen time (I assume due to Virginia Hey’s condition,) but it brought up all sorts of season one memories when she lectured “Future-John” about losing his humanity (and then “Future-John” puts his hands on her temples, Unity style! Kudos for that, Ben!) Meanwhile Rygel, at best, was amusingly mocking, and at worst was preparing to kill whichever Crichton crossed his path for purposes of self-preservation. D’argo is definitely mellowing—he didn’t body slam “Caveman-John” into the portal, and he helped real John try to find another way out of this mess(albeit with an ultimatum.) We also get to see the evolution of his relationship with Chiana, particularly when he orders her to stay out of danger (obviously a protective streak, but…is that a good thing? *zips lips* :P)
Once again I have to bring up the SpaceCast episode chronicle, because even when I disagree with them, I respect their deep analysis. One thing that might be a bit isolating about this fandom, though, is the high wall of J/A shippers. :P I like the couple myself, but I fall short of shipper intensity. Anywho, last episode, they ended on a highly flirtatious (and sexually suggestive) note, and this one they hardly spent any time together. Some folks on the podcast wished that Aeryn could have had the time with “Caveman-John” that Chiana did, or at least that the opening scene where she argued with real John over whose ship was more important was more drawn out rather than a one-note comedy sketch. Obviously, the big reason none of this happened is that “Farscape” subsists on drawing out the J/A tension for as long as possible. :P But more to the point, this gives us the chance to actually focus on the secondary characters.
Personally, I’m huge into making Chiana the main woman in John’s life this week (not for purposes of my subversive icon, I promise, but because of their friendship.) As the ScapeCast itself explored, John and Chiana are both the more vulnerable, “most expendable” members of the crew. Their whole relationship started with John having empathy for her situation, and since then she’s always gravitated towards the most defenseless “critters.” It’s part of Chiana’s complexity, too—she’ll run when she has to (I enjoyed Rygel lecturing her on her lack of survival instincts this ep,) but she won’t put an innocent in danger. It’s a part of her personality that she shares with John, which culminated in the final scene of the episode, and one of my favorites from the entirety of “Farscape.”
Aeryn isn’t so in tune with her vulnerable side, at least not now. That’s not to say that she doesn’t have a deep respect for John. Notice that during her entire time with “Future-John,” she never once considers taking his side. He certainly is the most pragmatic Crichton to have around, but her loyalty is unshaken and it’s for the real John. In fact, the whole reason she chose to stay with “Future-John,” IMHO, was to make sure he couldn’t get away with anything (until, alas, he knocked her out. Another one of those J/A staples. :P) Back in season one, when she thought our human was a complete inferior, she would have sold him out without thought. So yeah, she’s growing, too.
But perhaps nobody is growing as much as John this episode (ta da ching. :P) I really like how the two replicas came out thinking they were the real John, but over time, due to their altered mind states, that changed. Obviously it’s easiest to spot with “Future-John,” who was suddenly figuring out equations that real John could only grasp at. The more intelligent he became, the less in tune he was with his humanity (and the more in tune he was with a Texas accent :P). Complete opposite to “Caveman-John,” and real John was somewhere in the middle. He started out pretty cynical about his less developed clone, but when push came to shove about sacrificing someone, he fought it. Ultimately it was the primitive John who, the least hindered by selfishness and personal desire, recognized who belonged here. Yeah, it was expected, but it was also true to character. And it set real John down his own path…interesting to note that he’s still struggling with how he fits in with the crew, and now his self-perception, as he discusses with Chiana. He did, after all, send two people, albeit clones, to an undesired future in his place, so is he as much of the good guy as he hoped? Or is he more cruel like his possible future self? Not only questions applicable to this episode, but for his entire run in the UT, where he’s definitely gotten more snarky and violent. :P But maybe that’s what you need friends around for, to bring out the best in yourself. *swoon*
